If you are available to assist in the library each Monday while Ms. LaMarre attends an on campus meeting, please contact her at Kimberly.LaMarre@pfisd.net  No library skills are necessary, just a smile.

This Week was PACKED!

We started the week on a Monday- a first for this school year- and managed to pack in some great events for the rest of the week!!

We played a great game of volleyball on Tuesday night, an amazing football game on Wednesday night, had a great turnout for Open House on Thursday night and then experienced our first Free Seating in the cafeteria during lunch on Friday! The students were so well behaved throughout each of the aforementioned. Thank you for the way you support our efforts by reinforcing expectations at home.

I have been asked how to "follow" this blog a number of times by parents, I have no idea! If you do, please post a comment online or email me with directions, so I can post directions.

Attached is the Park Crest Middle School PreAP Science Fair Guide & Timeline. Please help your student out by following this timeline. We are asking for the parent/guardian to sign off on each area to ensure the students do not get too far behind. Learning to manage time is a big deal for most people and it starts now!

40 Book Challenge

We start our first five-day week next week. At this point, students should have read at least 2 books. Starting on their third. For a quick read, I recommend Love That Dog by, Sharon Chreech. It is written in prose and does not require students to commit to a larger novel with longer stamina.
I am keeping track of the books I am reading this year as well. You can see the books I am reading and my progress by visiting my 40 Book Challenge Page .

Ummm...

Yeah, well I have no real good way to start this next post so I'm just gonna jump into the deep end.
I've been informed the boy's restroom in the 7th grade hall has been used...inappropriately...While I don't know the specific culprits or circumstances for a myriad of reasons- A) I have not interviewed every male student using that restroom, B) I'm not so much inclined to sit outside said restroom all day to even begin to interview the male population about the restroom atmosphere, C) Do I really even need to keep going?
Here's the bottom line-
The urinals in the C Hall are the kind that are on the floor. I'm not an expert on this but that seems to be creating some sort of dilemma/challenge for some of the male students. I've asked Mr. Shuman (the 6th grade Principal) to talk with all the 7th grade male students after lunch tomorrow (I'll dismiss the ladies and hold back the gentlemen) for a brief restroom etiquette talk. It will be appropriate and clean (pun intended). If you have a young man in the house, perhaps you could reinforce this with them-
If you make a mess, clean it up. If you see a mess, tell an adult so we can get the messed cleaned quickly.
You can add other discussion points along this line if you like. My son has his friends over all the time and I've finally just told them all how it is because their at my house so much it's like their mine too, but I think I've said enough here...

University Interscholastic League (UIL)

A strong reminder about eligibility:

"The sole purpose of eligibility rules and contest regulations is to keep competition equitable and to maintain activities in proper perspective. It is the responsibility of each school to see that students do not compete unless they comply with all eligibility rules. It is also the responsibility of the student to observe and obey these standards." UIL eligibility policy

Important date regarding eligibility:

October 4thStudents will not be allowed to practice or suit out if they are not eligible. Please ensure students are meeting campus-wide expectations by reading nightly- in order to reach the 40 Book Challenge, doing their math homework- in order to have critical skills necessary to advance to more challenging material, studying science and social studies content/vocabulary- in order to build a stronger framework of understanding for labs and/or group discussions.

For additional questions about UIL, please revisit the Extracurricular Handbook on my blog (using the drop down menu bar) or the PCMS webpage.

PTO Meeting

That PTO meeting was great! I am so impressed with the number of parents who turn out to support PCMS. There were lots of great ideas shared, including but not limited to, going to Target.com and voting for PCMS. There is a financial kickback for the school if you do this. Also, using the Target debit card at Target (and selecting PCMS as your preferred campus) provides a financial kickback to the school as well.
Our PTO is amazing! They have planned many exciting things this year to support our students. Oh yeah, there's going to be a grade level competition soon for Boxtops. 7th grade is going to rock it- shhhh! Don't tell 6th and 8th grades!

Make sure you check the PTO website and calendar for ways to get involved with the great things happening through their leadership and guidance!

Looking forward to seeing everyone next week for Open House!!

PTO will be meeting tomorrow, September 5th at 6:30PM, in the library. I will be "representing" as administrator. Hope to see many friendly faces!!
